Description
Shakori Hills is known for the famous Shakori Hills Music Festival just outside of Chapel Hill, NC. Shakori Hills Community Arts Center is a place where everyone can enjoy nature, take strolls on beautiful trails, have family afternoons in the sun and enjoy art, music, family, life and all it has to offer. By building on what we are blessed to have at our fingertips, our local culture will continue to strengthen and prosper!
The Shakori 40 brings the running community together to race within nature and enjoy each other. We will have a 40 mile and 40K open race for men and women and a 40 mile relay for up to 10 members. The relay will be age graded which means men, women and age will play a part in the overall winning team.
You will have a blast at the Shakori 40 through camaraderie, great music, food, camping bon fires, beer and so much more! Join us each December for a weekend to remember!

- All relay teams must wear the bib they are issued. Each person on each team gets 1 bib. You can run in ANY ORDER you choose, but you must wear your bib and have your baton.
- Your relay baton is your timing chip. You must carry your baton the entire race and hand it off to the next person. You baton must cross the checkpoint and finish line. If you lose your baton, you are disqualified.

- HANDICAP - Each individual is handicapped and that helps the entire team. For example: if you are a 50 year old female you have a 24% handicap. Because you are part of a team that has 10 legs or a 10 person team, you bring your teams handicap down from 100% (which is 0 handicap) to 97.6%. Now your overall time is multiplied by .976. The more people on your team with a handicap, the lower your overall team's handicap score will be. This takes a lot of strategic thinking, its not all about the handicap, and it is not all about being the fastest either. Handicap percentages below.

- RELAY RULES
1. There is no specific order your team has to run, however the first person from each team will need to check in your team before the race start.
2. Each team has a baton, you must complete the race with your baton
3. Each runner's first leg will count toward their overall 4 mile time. For example if you are running 2 legs of the relay, legs 1 and 6, your first leg will be the one that counts toward the 4 mile overall results (even if 6 is faster)
4. Each runner must run with a chipped bib and their team's baton
5. Handicaps will be added to the team's times throughout the day. The lower the handicap, the more time off the team will receive at the end. For example 89 means 89% of the overall time:)
6. Any changes to your team must be submitted prior to the race or your team is subject to DQ.
4 MILE OPEN START - 10:00am
The 4 mile race is for folks who cannot find a relay team. 4 mile runners will be inputted into the overall 4 mile split results from the relay. All 4 mile individuals will do 1 start at 10:00am
HOW TO SIGN UP A TEAM
Signing up a team is easy. The first member of each team will create the team name and sign themselves up. Each team member thereafter will sign up and JOIN the team. Team members are signing up similar to individuals, except they will be on a team. The reason we do this is there is a specific cost per participant and each participant in the relay is also scored as an individual in the 4 mile results. Price increases apply to everyone.

ABOUT THE COURSE
This course is a showcase of central North Carolina running as it offers something for everyone! The challenging loop contains a healthy mixture of all types of terrain and natural surfaces as it meanders through the festival property on smooth fast sections of established dirt/grass roads leading to open fields that offer plenty of opportunities to open up the throttle. Runners then enter into old school rough and beautiful sections of old growth double and single track through the woods that circle you back into the festival after a couple of challenging climbs to keep runners honest. The Shakori 40 does not disappoint!
