Frequently Asked Questions
There are four major options:
-
40-mile Individual (10 laps of the 4-mile loop)
-
40K Individual (6 laps of the 4-mile loop)
-
4-mile Open Race - Can't find a team but still want to run? This is your choice. Results compiled with individual 4 mile legs of the relay for overall 4 mile awards
-
40-mile Team Relay (age-graded) for 2-10 runners
The course features a 4-mile cross-country style loop through the Shakori Hills grounds. Expect single-track, gravel roads, open fields, twists & turns. Start/finish is at the fairgrounds/camping area
-
Teams can be as small as 2 people, up to 10.
-
One person registers and creates the team name; others join and pay individually. Or you can pay for an entire team of 10 with a one time fee and then rest of the team joins at no cost unless they want to buy a camping pass or additional items.
-
Every team member still competes individually in the 4-mile results (their first lap counts) even while being part of the relay.
-
Each member must wear their bib, and the team baton (timing chip) must be carried and handed off. If you lose the baton, the team is disqualified.
-
Team times are age- and gender-handicapped to level the playing field; fastest raw time doesn’t guarantee victory
-
Relay registration closes Tuesday, December 1 at 11:59am. Make sure your whole team is registered and joined by then.
-
Camping is available on-site at Shakori Hills. You must purchase a camping pass (add-on) during registration.
-
Arrival: Friday from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM (try to arrive before dusk for the easiest setup) or Saturday morning. You may stay Saturday night, leave Sunday by 9:00 AM.
-
Non-runner / spectator pass: Everyone 18 and older who is not racing needs a Non-Runner Ticket (camping pass). Kids 17 and under are free. Includes a wristband, plus a beer ticket for those 21+.
-
Pets are OK but must be leashed, well-behaved. No open ground fires, bring trash bags, quiet hours begin at 10:00 PM
-
Parking: All parking is in the big Shakori parking field.
You can pick up your individual or team packet Friday between 1:00pm and 8:00pm at the Shakori Hills Barn. Saturday pickup opens at 6:00am. If you are camping, try to arrive before dusk for the easiest setup. Stick around for live music and our Friday Night Cookout with jambalaya and chowder. Dinner is included, donations are welcome, and we ask everyone to RSVP by Tuesday, November 24.
The Friday Night Cookout is included for everyone who comes out Friday to race, camp and have fun with us. Chef Bob High is serving jambalaya and chowder at 6:30pm with live music starting at 6:00pm. Beer will be available for purchase.
Food costs have gone up, so donations are welcome on site by cash or Venmo to help us keep this tradition going.
Please RSVP by Tuesday, November 24 so we can plan enough food: Friday Night Cookout RSVP
Yes. The main aid station is at the 4 mile checkpoint, which is also the relay exchange, so you pass it every lap. It will be stocked with water, electrolyte drink, gels, warm pizza, soup, warm pastries and other ultra goodies.
Expect a mix of single-track trails (some rocky), gravel roads, open fields, and rolling terrain. It’s not flat asphalt—cross-country style. Trail shoes would be a great choice or if you are trying to open up in the relay, you could spike up.
RVs require advance purchase/permission (per the camping rules). Tent camping is OK; vehicles in tent zones may have restrictions.
The Shakori 40 is unique in that we offer more of a festival and invest a lot in the live music and the festival around the actual running event. Shakori Hills also charges us per person who enters the venue, so everyone 18 and older who is not racing needs to buy a $25 Non-Runner Ticket (camping pass), good for Friday and Saturday. Kids 17 and under are free.
